Oxford Advanced Surfaces validates core adhesion technology for Printed Electronics

OntoTM surface modification technology facilitates breakthrough in advanced interlayer adhesion using solution printing

Oxford Advanced Surfaces Group Plc (OAS), the advanced materials company, announced that they have successfully completed the Technology Strategy Board funded project on Customised Adhesion of Inter-layers for Plastic Electronics (CAIPE).

The project aimed to develop a much needed solution to the persistent interlayer delamination problems facing device manufacturers in plastic electronics.  Delamination is one of the major issues in moving from rigid to flexible displays.

In collaboration with their project partners PETEC (Printable Electronics Technology Centre) and OMIC (Organic Materials Innovation Centre), OAS’s OntoTM surface treatment technology has delivered robust adhesion between the different interfaces in flexible organic thin film transistor devices.

Impressively, this has been achieved using a solution printing process, opening up the opportunity for use in next generation flexible e-paper and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. Further, this continuous process for preparing flexible displays is expected to offer a cost advantage over current vacuum batch production methods, in line with other solution process techniques adopted in other markets.

A second phase of work has now begun with the aim of reaching pilot scale and marketing the technology to the global electronics sector. Further work will look to expand the use of the technology into other electronic devices including thin film solar cells, memory, logic and batteries.

“The printed electronics market is forecast to be in the order of $10B by 2015 in multiple application areas from displays to photovoltaics†commented Mike Edwards, VP of Sales & Marketing. “The collaboration with PETEC has served as a concrete validation of our Ontoâ"¢ interlayer adhesion technology and we look forward to continuing this relationship as we seek global licensing partners in the area of printed electronicsâ€.

Myrddin Jones, Lead Technologist at the Technology Strategy Board, said: "This investment shows how the Technology Strategy Board supports and accelerates technology innovation, helping to give UK companies a competitive edge and a springboard into the global marketplace.  We are delighted with the success of the CAIPE project and look forward to the technology being marketed worldwide."

Dr Mike Eason, Managing Director of OAS stated “We are thrilled to have demonstrated one of many practical applications of the Ontoâ"¢ chemistry platform. Display technologies and solar cells are widely recognised as two of the markets predicted for highest growth over the next decade. We are excited to have a technology that can meet an important challenge for these growth markets. We look forward to marketing and commercialising the technology with our partners.â€
