Oxford Advanced Surfaces validates core adhesion technology for Printed Electronics

OntoTM surface modification technology facilitates breakthrough in advanced interlayer adhesion using solution printing

Oxford Advanced Surfaces Group Plc (OAS), the advanced materials company, announced that they have successfully completed the Technology Strategy Board funded project on Customised Adhesion of Inter-layers for Plastic Electronics (CAIPE).

The project aimed to develop a much needed solution to the persistent interlayer delamination problems facing device manufacturers in plastic electronics.  Delamination is one of the major issues in moving from rigid to flexible displays. 

In collaboration with their project partners PETEC (Printable Electronics Technology Centre) and OMIC (Organic Materials Innovation Centre), OAS’s OntoTM surface treatment technology has delivered robust adhesion between the different interfaces in flexible organic thin film transistor devices.

Impressively, this has been achieved using a solution printing process, opening up the opportunity for use in next generation flexible e-paper and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. Further, this continuous process for preparing flexible displays is expected to offer a cost advantage over current vacuum batch production methods, in line with other solution process techniques adopted in other markets. 

A second phase of work has now begun with the aim of reaching pilot scale and marketing the technology to the global electronics sector. Further work will look to expand the use of the technology into other electronic devices including thin film solar cells, memory, logic and batteries.
