Wiggins Group plc, the airport owner and property group, announces that it has
successfully concluded its negotiations with Bedfordshire County Council and Mid
Beds District Council and secured planning permission for the redevelopment of
the former (NHS) hospital at Fairfield, near Letchworth. The site extends to
164 acres and was acquired by Wiggins from the NHS in 1999.
The Fairfield Park planning approval underscores Wiggins' abilities as a major
developer dealing with complex town planning and development opportunities.
The development comprises the refurbishment of an extensive listed Grade II
Victorian hospital which will provide 101 flats, close care development and a
health and fitness centre, with a further 673 houses in the grounds together
with a school, employment, retail and leisure development. In addition the
scheme will provide 45 affordable dwellings. The development, which will be
heavily landscaped, is located just beyond the Letchworth Garden City boundary
and close to the Green Belt. It will incorporate many of the Garden City
principles in a modern and sustainable context.
Fairfield Park will provide a new settlement for over two thousand residents.
It is currently one of the largest housing schemes in the South East of England
and will be developed by a consortium of well-known house builders.
A statement from the board of Wiggins commented, 'Although Fairfield Park is a
large scheme, it will enshrine the principles of sustainable development and
provide a high quality residential environment in a mature landscaped setting,
as well as significant community benefits both on and off site.'
