Hays
The recruiter was under pressure in early trade following
the publication of full year results which showed net fees falling 8% to
£905.5m as hiring markets remained subdued across many key geographies. There
were some encouraging signs beneath the surface, however, with pre-exceptional
operating profit rising 7% to £48.6m after management pushed through
significant cost savings and improved consultant productivity. Investors appear
to remain cautious over the outlook, with the company cutting its full year
dividend by 65% as it rolls out its new "Momentum" strategy aimed at
delivering a substantial uplift in profitability over the medium term.
Banco Santander
Santander attracted attention after confirming the
completion of its previously announced acquisition of US lender Webster
Financial. The deal, valued at around $12.2bn when first announced,
significantly expands Santander's footprint in the United States and creates
one of the largest retail and commercial banking franchises in the north-east
of the country. Management believes the transaction will accelerate
profitability growth in the region, targeting an 18% return on tangible equity
by 2028. Investors are likely to view the move positively given the scale
benefits and revenue synergies on offer, although integration risks will
inevitably remain a focus.
ATOME Energy
The AIM-listed green fertiliser developer was one of the
more upbeat stories of the morning after announcing progress within its
renewable power division. The company has secured financial and technical
backing from a multilateral development bank fund to support a feasibility
study for a proposed 300MWp solar project in Paraguay. The facility would sit
alongside ATOME's Villeta green fertiliser project and has the potential to
become the centrepiece of a wider industrial and battery storage hub. Whilst
the project remains subject to power purchase agreement progress, the
announcement adds further credibility to the company's longer-term clean energy
ambitions and could provide support for the share price.
