Spectris plc: Transaction in own shares

Spectris plc announces that on 15 March 2007 it purchased 50,000 of its 5p
ordinary shares at a volume weighted average price paid per share of 848.600p.
Spectris plc purchased these shares via Hoare Govett Limited's affiliate, ABN
AMRO Bank N.V., London Branch.

The highest price paid per share was 849.25p, and the lowest price paid was
848p.

The shares purchased will be held as treasury shares. Following the above
purchase, Spectris plc holds 400,000 shares in treasury.

The total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding treasury shares) is
124,594,993.
