Notifications concerning interests in ordinary shares of US$0.50 each in the
capital of Anglo American plc ('Ordinary Shares')


Notifications pursuant to sections 198(1), 202(3) and 202(4) of the Companies
Act 1985


We received today a notice given on behalf of the following entities pursuant
to sections 198(1), 202(3) and 202(4) of the Companies Act 1985 ('the Act') in
relation to transactions which completed on 29 October 2001 ('the
Transactions').

The entities concerned are:


    *      Bastion Holdings Limited ('Bastion')

    *      E O & Son Holdings Limited ('EOS')

    *      Dr K-H Ritter, Maitland Trustees Limited and C Andina ('the
           Trustees')

    *      Maitland Trustees Limited and Theseus Limited ('the EOS Trustees')
           Pradine Limited ('Pradine')

    *      Spectre Limited (a company incorporated in the British Virgin
           Islands) ('Spectre (BVI)')

    *      Spectre Limited (a company incorporated in Liberia) ('Spectre
           (Liberia)')

Prior to the Transactions, each of Bastion, Pradine, Spectre (Liberia) and the
Trustees had a notifiable interest, within the meaning of sections 199(2), 203
and 208 of the Act, in 81,742,085 Ordinary Shares. Those Ordinary Shares were
registered in the names of the following companies:

On 29 October 2001, the following events occurred as a result of the
Transactions:


 1. Bastion, Pradine, Spectre (Liberia) and the Trustees ceased to have an
    interest in 81,742,085 Ordinary Shares;


 2. EOS, Spectre (BVI) and the EOS Trustees acquired an interest in the said
    81,742,085 Ordinary Shares.


Following the Transactions, EOS, Spectre (BVI) and the EOS Trustees had a
notifiable interest in an aggregate of 81,742,085 Ordinary Shares. Those
Ordinary Shares are registered in the names of the companies referred to in
the list of registered shareholders above.
