                   Market Purchase of Company's Own Shares

Notification is given that pursuant to the authority granted at the Annual
General Meeting of the Company held on 20 July 2000 to make market purchases
of the Company's own shares of 25p, two market purchases, one of 1,000,000 and
one of 6,500,000 ordinary shares of 25p each in the capital of the Company
were made today at a price of 59.00p per share.

Following this purchase and cancellation there will be 431,488,893 shares in
issue.
