Repurchase of ordinary shares for cancellation

The Scottish American Investment Company plc announces that on 5 September 2002
it purchased for cancellation 400,000 ordinary shares in the market at a price
of 141.5p per ordinary share.

The Scottish American Investment Company plc also announces that on 7 August
2002 it purchased for cancellation a further 70,000 ordinary shares in the
market at a price of 144.5p per ordinary share. As a result of this and
purchases already announced there remain 138,302,943 ordinary shares in issue.
