J Sainsbury plc was today informed by Miss Judith Portrait in her capacity as
Trustee of various Sainsbury Settlements including Charitable Trusts, that her
substantial interest in the Company has decreased following her retirement as a
Trustee for Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover's Settlements and Charitable
Trust. Miss Portrait remains a Trustee of the other Sainsbury family Settlements
and Charities and of the Blind Trust for Lord Sainsbury of Turville.

As a result the reportable interest is now 23 per cent instead of the 27 per
cent previously reported.
