Suspension of Lamezia Service

Ryanair Holdings PLC 21 November 2000 RYANAIR SUSPENDS LAMEZIA SERVICE Ryanair, Europe's leading low fares airline today announced that with effect from 1 December it will suspend its daily flight from London to Lamezia in the South of Italy. Ryanair's route to Lamezia which started on 1 July has been a big success thanks to Ryanair's low air fares. In just six months over 30,000 passengers were carried on the route where no services existed previously. Recently however the Board of Lamezia Airport have sought to amend the terms of its contract with Ryanair and despite the threat from Ryanair that it would suspend the service Lamezia has persisted in this position, and has failed to respond to Ryanair's request to honour the contract between the parties. Announcing this decision today, Ryanair's Commercial Director, Michael Cawley said; 'Ryanair regrets suspending any route such as Lamezia which is a commercial success, but we have been left with no alternative as we have found it impossible to maintain a satisfactory relationship with the Board of Lamezia Airport. They have sought to change our original agreement and to renege on a number of the provisions in that agreement. This is completely at variance with the partnership principal upon which Ryanair operates at all of our airports. Ryanair is always prepared and willing to work with airports who honour agreements and try to resolve issues but this is not the case with Lamezia. 'We continue to be in discussions with over 20 new European airports, all of whom are anxious to attract Ryanair's unique low fares services next year. We expect to be announcing the launch of five or six new routes some time early in 2001. We will be happy to recommence services to Lamezia should the Board of the airport confirm that they will honour the terms of our agreement and will work with Ryanair to promote low fare services, traffic and tourism at Lamezia and indeed Calabria'
