Strathclyde University enhance engineering offering with two new Vicon systems

OMG plc, Oxford Metrics Group (LSE: OMG), ("OMG" or "the Group") the technology group providing image understanding products for the entertainment, defence, life science and engineering industries, is pleased to announce Strathclyde University has purchased two Vicon T-Series systems for its Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Bioengineering departments.

The EEE department offers a broad range of innovative, industrially relevant and professionally accredited undergraduate and postgraduate courses covering all fields of the discipline. It will be using a six T160 Vicon system to test the accuracy of directional algorithms for autonomous robots.

"As part of the UK Research Centre for Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE), we've undertaken research into the potential of miniature semi-autonomous robots to deliver a variety of inspection techniques to structures in challenging areas - for example in the oil, gas, and nuclear industries," said Dr. Gareth Pierce, lecturer at Strathclyde University EEE department.

The robots can incorporate a number of different NDE payloads including ultrasonic, eddy current, visual and magnetic-based payloads, developed into an adaptable and flexible inspection platform.  Pierce says the challenge of using mobile robotic platforms to deliver NDE to a structure combines difficulties arising from both robotic positioning, and NDE sensor measurements.

Pierce comments: "Our current research is exploring new techniques to accurately locate the 3D position of the robotic devices. The Vicon T-Series camera system will allow us to benchmark our new sensor technologies against a state of the art, precision 3D motion capture system."

The second T-Series system is being installed in the Bioengineering Unit at Strathclyde University, Scotland's centre of excellence for postgraduate training and research in biomedical engineering. It chose Vicon's highest resolution cameras to support their existing movement analysis research.

Imogen Moorhouse, MD at Vicon said: "Strathclyde University has been a Vicon customer for over 25 years and these latest system additions are an indication of our great working relationship.

"Accuracy is vital when monitoring semi autonomous robots, which is why the EEE department chose the Vicon T160 camera for their study."
