Outokumpu implements a major energy saving project
PRESS RELEASE

Outokumpu implements a major energy saving project in Tornio Works
production site in Finland. A total of 50 separate refrigeration compressors in
the cold rolling plant will be replaced with a new centralized district cooling
system. As a result, the annual electricity consumption is reduced by 11 GWh.
Additionally, the new system decreases carbon dioxide emissions by 6Â 700 tonnes.
To replace the current electricity driven compressors in the cold rolling plant,
new cooling towers and a heat exchanger for free cooling will be installed.
Additionally, two absorption coolers which utilize process waste heat as primary
energy and two turbo-chillers will be installed. With the new system, the
electricity needed in the cooling process is decreased from 15 GWh to 3.9 GWh.
As part of the financing, the Finnish Government has granted a subsidy of almost
EUR 2 million to the project as it represents a major energy saving action.
Hannu Hautala from Tornio Works comments: "This project is an extremely
important energy saving measure. The usability of the centralized district
cooling system is good. This is also a very cost-efficient solution."
The new system will be taken into use in Tornio by the end of 2011.
