                   THE FLEMING JAPANESE INVESTMENT TRUST PLC


                 REPURCHASE OF ORDINARY SHARES FOR CANCELLATION


The Fleming Japanese Investment Trust plc announces that on Friday 1st February
in the market they purchased for cancellation 260,000 ordinary shares at 169p
per share representing 0.14% of the ordinary shares in issue.

The remaining shares in issue following this repurchase total 190,196,919.
