John Lewis of Hungerford plc

The Company has been notified that Christopher Rocker, a director of John Lewis
of Hungerford plc, purchased 81,000 ordinary shares of the Company on 1 October
2002 at a price of 0.88 pence per share. This increases Mr Rocker's holding to
250,000 ordinary shares representing approximately 0.17 per cent of the
Company's issued share capital.
