                                SPA CANCELLATION

UK COAL PLC refers to the shareholder approval given at its AGM in May 2003 to
the cancellation of its share premium account and now announces that, on 10
December 2003, the High Court of Justice confirmed the cancellation of the share
premium account of UK COAL PLC, amounting to £290,997,338.64.

The Order of the Court was registered by the Registrar of Companies today and
the cancellation of the share premium account is therefore effective.
