Changes to Timeline Serv.

BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS PLC 1 October 1999 CHANGES TO BT '192' AND TIMELINE SERVICES BT today announced changes to its directory enquiry and Timeline services. From November 1, the cost of calls to the UK directory enquiry service on '192' will rise from 35p to 40p (inc.VAT). From the same date, callers to the Timeline service, the speaking clock on '123,' will be charged a one-off fee of 10p (inc. VAT). Calls to the directory enquiry service will continue to be free for customers using payphone lines, and for those with disabilities which prevent them from using a printed Phone Book, such as blind and visually impaired people. BT has also introduced a free directory information service on the Internet. A BT spokesman said: 'The price increase is necessary to fund further improvements in customer service on 192 and to cover increased costs. 'The growth of new number types and the volume of listings calls for further investment to develop and grow our systems so we that can give the quality of service our customers demand.' Customers will still be able to ask for two numbers with every directory enquiry call. PhoneNet - BT's free directory information service on the Internet - can be found at www.bt.com/phonenetuk. Already, it is dealing with three million searches a day. The service complements BT's other electronic directory enquiry products - Phone Disc and Phone Base. TIMELINE From November 1, callers to the Timeline service will be charged a single set fee of 10p (including VAT); currently they are charged at BT's local call rate (subject to a minimum charge of 5p, including VAT). A BT spokesman said: 'This is the first time we have changed the way BT charges for Timeline. At a simple single charge of 10p, we think the service offers excellent value for money.'
