BT Cellnet Restructures Pricing - Mobile Internet

British Telecommunications PLC 9 March 2000 BT CELLNET RESTRUCTURES PRICING FOR THE MOBILE INTERNET AGE BT Cellnet is re-structuring its pricing to take Mobile Internet to the mass market. From 3 April customers will be able to choose between Mobile Internet and voice-only calling plans. The three post-pay Mobile Internet packages are Net 100, Net 200, and Net 400. The packages include 100, 200 and 400 minutes which can be used for Internet access via the Genie Internet portal (www.genie.co.uk) or standard voice calls to UK landlines or BT Cellnet mobiles. Peter Erskine, Managing Director of BT Cellnet commented: 'We expect our Mobile Internet sales to overtake traditional mobile phone sales in the coming months. It is this belief in the scale of change taking place in our business that leads us to launch a new calling plan structure that gives people the choice between a combination of voice and Mobile Internet and voice only calls.' The choice of voice-only call plans will be: My Time 500, Call 30, Call 120, Call 250 and One Rate 300. The packages are designed to be straightforward, offer more inclusive minutes and reductions of up to 50% on standard call rates. The new tariffs have been unveiled today to coincide with the announcement that BT Cellnet will be launching the UK's first pre-pay Mobile Internet phones. The pre-pay phones will be available in the high street, and via the Internet, from Monday 3 April, for £99.99. The Mobile Internet pre-pay package will include up to 200 free minutes per month which can be used at the weekend for standard voice calls and Mobile Internet access. New customers who connect between 3 April and 30 June 2000 will get double the number of bundled minutes for a period of three months from the date of purchase. Mobile Internet calling will be charged at a flat rate of 10p per minute at all times and voice calls are charged at 30p per minute at peak times and 5p per minute off-peak. Post-pay Mobile Internet customers who connect between 3 April and 30 June 2000 will also double their free call allowance according to which calling plan they are on for the first three months after purchase. Peter Erskine adds: 'We have totally restructured our pricing structure to reflect our view that Mobile Internet is set to be the key growth sector of our business in coming months.'
