BALFOUR BEATTY WELCOMES GO-AHEAD FOR

A46 NEWARK TO WIDMERPOOL ROAD SCHEME

Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction, services and investment group, welcomes the announcement by the Department for Transport that the A46 Newark to Widmerpool project has been given the go-ahead.

The A46 is an important regional strategic road connecting the East and West Midlands and has been identified for accelerated delivery under the Government's fiscal stimulus package.  The Highways Agency cost range estimate for the project is £322 million to £409 million.

The project was awarded to Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering as an Early Contractor Involvement project in early 2004. The statutory process and environmental statement has been successfully completed and accepted by the Inquiry Inspector.

Balfour Beatty Chief Executive, Ian Tyler, said:

'We are delighted that the construction of this important scheme can go ahead. We look forward to working with the Highways Agency and to delivering on another Early Contractor Involvement scheme.'

The scheme involves the design and construction of a new 28 km, two-lane dual carriageway from the A606 two-level junction at Widmerpool, to an improved roundabout at Farndon, just South of Newark. Work is expected to start in early 2009 and is scheduled for completion in late 2011.

Balfour Beatty's current road contracts include the A3 Hindhead improvement scheme; the M74 completion contract in Scotland; the M1 junctions 6a - 10, where the main carriageways will be fully open for Christmas; the A421 scheme between the M1 and

Bedford and the upgrade of the A1(M) between Bramham and Wetherby in Yorkshire. In consortium, Balfour Beatty has been appointed preferred bidder for the PPP contract to provide additional capacity and maintain the M25 and for the Carlisle Northern Development Route contract.

Balfour Beatty also owns and operates four PFI road schemes. These are the M1/A1 link in Yorkshire, the A30/A35 in Devon and Dorset, the A50 in Derbyshire and the M77/GSO in Scotland.
