Over the month NAV was up 4.5%1. This compares to an increase in the benchmark of 3.8%2, an increase of 3.7%1 and 1.9%1 for the MSCI World (£) and FTSE All Share indices respectively. Financial* year to date, net asset value rose 17.8%1 compared to a rise of 15.8%2 for the Datastream index, 11.6%1 for the MSCI World (£) and 12.2%1 for the FTSE All Share. Manager's Comment The NAV of British Empire finished the financial year with solid gains despite equity market corrections in the spring and late summer. A weak US housing market has raised fears over the ability of the US economy to continue to grow. A sharp fall in US mortgage backed securities has spilled over into a more generalised credit crunch. As a result, volatility in the equity markets has picked up dramatically. We have held a certain amount of liquidity throughout the year to guard against uncertainty. Wider discounts and increased volatility have created opportunities to reinvest some of our cash.
