DEPUTY CHAIRMAN

LONDON: Thursday, 13 April 2000 - Mr Jean-Paul Luksic, a director of
Antofagasta plc, has been elected Deputy Chairman of the company.  Mr Luksic
is the Chief Executive Officer of Antofagasta's mining division in Chile and
President of Minera Los Pelambres.
