Directorate change

Ms. Clare Salmon was appointed a director of The Alliance Trust PLC ("the
Company") on 17 June 2005.  The Articles of Association of the Company require a
director to have a holding of 200 qualification shares in the Company, but,
having been advised in error that such shares should not be acquired during the
recent close period, Ms Salmon did not hold these shares within 2 months of her
appointment (as required by s 291 of the Companies Act 1985) and, therefore,
automatically vacated office with effect from 17 August 2005.

The Board of the Company intends to re-appoint Ms Salmon to the Board after she
has acquired her qualification shares and a further announcement will be made
when the re-appointment is confirmed.
