The Board of The Alliance Trust PLC announces the following appointment:

Mr. David Alun Deards joins the Board as Finance Director, with effect from 1
January 2003.

Mr. Deard's appointment falls to be approved by the stockholders at the next
Annual General Meeting of the Company.

The following information is given pursuant to the requirements of paragraph
16.4 of the Listing Rules.

Mr. Deards has not previously held a directorship of a publicly quoted company.

There is no information to be disclosed pursuant to the requirements of
paragraph 6.F.2 (b) to (g) of the Listing Rules.
