Director Shareholding

The Alliance Trust PLC ("the Company") on 23 June 2005 received notification
from Abacus Corporate Trustee Limited as Trustee of The Alliance Trust PLC
Employee Benefit Trust ("the Trust") (a discretionary trust of which all
employees of The Alliance Trust PLC and its subsidiaries are beneficiaries),
that on 27 May 2005 while 234 ordinary 25p shares in the capital of the Company
were purchased by Abacus Corporate Trustee Limited on behalf of Sheila Ruckley,
a director of the Company, the actual number of shares that should have been
acquired was 235.  As a result a further one share has been acquired on behalf
of the said director.

Following this transaction Mrs. Ruckley has an interest in 9,791 ordinary 25p
shares.
