Further Regulatory Progress in Colombia for d2w Biodegradable Technology
Symphony Environmental Technologies plc (AIM: SYM), the global specialist in technologies that make plastic products smarter, safer and more sustainable, is pleased to announce a further regulatory development relating to its d2w biodegradable technology.
The Company has been informed that Monplast S.A.S. ("Monplast"), a Colombian manufacturer of polyethylene bags, has received a positive written response from the Colombian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (the"Ministry"). Colombia has a population of 53 millions, and is not an insubstantial market for plastic products.
The documentation submitted by Monplast included certification by Intertek (an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory) of polyethylene products made with Symphony’s d2w biodegradable masterbatch technology. The Ministry has acknowledged that this supports the proof of biodegradability required by Article 34 of Law 2232 of 2022 and the requirements of Article 19 of Resolution 0803 of 2024 relating to biodegradation time and the absence of substances of concern.
Although the Ministry does not issue certificates, it acknowledges the effort made to obtain laboratory certification for the product, and it supports the availability of the product on the market. They recommend that Monplast retain its supporting documentation, inform commercial establishments connected with its product, and present the documentation in the event of monitoring and control by the competent authorities.
This latest development follows Symphony’s announcements on 22 September and 5 October 2026 of positive Ministry responses relating to polypropylene drinking straws manufactured by Promociones Fantasticas S.A.S. and polyethylene films and bags manufactured by E.H.G. Color Plast S.A.S.
Together, these positive, independently supported developments strengthen the evidence available to manufacturers and commercial users assessing d2w technology, helping address continuing market misconceptions and build confidence in its biodegradability and environmental performance.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive Officer of Symphony Environmental, said:
“This further response from the Colombian Ministry is encouraging because it is now the third positive response involving products made with d2w technology in polyethylene and polypropylene.
The growing body of regulatory experience provides greater clarity and confidence for manufacturers and commercial users considering d2w technology in Colombia and throughout Latin America. Our focus now is on working with our partners to convert this progress into substantial commercial use and increased sales. This is not only good news for Symphony, but also for the environment, as d2w products will safely biodegrade if they enter the open environment instead of creating microplastics and remaining on land or floating in water for decades.”
