Further Development in Colombia - Government accepts d2w Evidence
for Polyethylene under Single-Use Plastics Law
Symphony Environmental Technologies plc (AIM: SYM) ("Symphony" or the "Company"), a global specialist in technologies that make plastic products smarter, safer and more sustainable, is pleased to announce a second positive development in Colombia, a country of 54 million people that consumes an estimated 1.3 million tonnes of plastic annually (source: Molpack). Following the approval of d2w for polypropylene drinking straws, announced on 22 September 2026, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (the “Ministry”) has now accepted scientific evidence supporting the use of Symphony’s d2w biodegradable technology in polyethylene films and bags.
The Company has been informed that E.H.G. Color Plast, a manufacturer of polyethylene films and bags, has received written confirmation from the Ministry that the scientific evidence submitted for products incorporating a d2w masterbatch shows compliance with Article 34 of Law 2232 of 2022 and the conditions established by Article 19 of Resolution 0803 of 2024. This confirmation is not itself a product approval or certification, but confirms that the evidence submitted satisfies the statutory requirements. This permits Color Plast to market its d2w films and bags as a biodegradable alternative, instead of being prohibited under Colombia’s single-use plastics framework.
This second confirmation provides further evidence that products incorporating d2w are being evaluated on proof of their environmental performance. The Ministry has now accepted the evidence for d2w in both PP and PE applications, broadening the commercial relevance of this regulatory pathway.
The evidence submitted by Color Plast was based on ASTM D6954 testing by Intertek, which is accredited to ISO 17025, and it addressed both biodegradation and non-toxicity. The Intertek report submitted by Color Plast was jointly funded by three other manufacturers of similar films and bags and has been submitted in support of their own applications. Those applications are currently being evaluated by the Ministry.
Symphony and its local partners are now working to convert this regulatory progress into sales. They are providing converters, brand owners and retailers with clear guidance on the legal pathway, helping them to adopt d2w and market their biodegradable products in Colombia.
This development follows the Company's announcement on 28 September 2026 that a further ten independent studies on its d2w technology had been completed by ISO 17025-accredited laboratories.
The programme tested applications in polyethylene and polypropylene to internationally recognised standards, including ASTM D6954, ISO 15985, ISO 17556 and ISO 24187. The results included 98.7% aerobic biodegradation and 91.06% anaerobic biodegradation, together with findings of no toxicity and no microplastics. d2w products have also been proved to be recyclable if collected, without the need for separation.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive Officer of Symphony Environmental, said:
"This second confirmation from the Colombian government is significant because it extends regulatory recognition of d2w technology beyond polypropylene products to polyethylene films and bags.
Together with the Ministry's earlier confirmation and the extensive accredited scientific evidence announced by Symphony last week, this provides further support that products made with d2w technology can meet biodegradability and environmental-safety requirements when assessed according to internationally-recognised testing standards. Therefore, if these products get into the open environment after use they will safely biodegrade and will not leave microplastics and lie or float around for decades. If collected they can be recycled.
Taken together, these developments strengthen Symphony’s commercial position in Colombia and provide a platform for further growth across Latin America and around the world.”
