Independent Test Results Strengthen the Evidence for d2p® Ethylene Adsorber
and
First Commercial Container Order Delivered
Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc (AIM:SYM), the global specialist in masterbatches and technologies which enhance the environmental performance and functionality of plastics, is pleased to announce that the latest independent test results for its d2p® Ethylene Adsorber "EA" active packaging technology have strengthened Symphony's evidence base for this technology. The Company has now delivered its first commercial container-load into Mexico.
The delivery was to Sirane Central Americana (www.sirane.mx) and is for d2p® EA masterbatch for incorporation into adsorbent packaging pads. It marks the first commercial container-load deployment of the d2p® EA technology, following an extensive programme of development and testing which now includes ethylene-adsorption test results issued by AIMPLAS (www.aimplas.es/) in September 2026.
Symphony has developed d2p® EA as a scalable masterbatch system for incorporation into a range of plastic packaging formats, including films, liners, bags, trays, lid films and adsorbent pads.
d2p® EA is Symphony's proprietary active-packaging technology that helps extend the shelf life of fresh produce by controlling ethylene gas and moisture levels within packaging. By slowing the ripening and deterioration process, d2p® EA helps maintain product quality for longer, reducing spoilage and food waste, and offering significant value to growers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.
The d2p® EA technology also reduces carbon dioxide within the packaging which may otherwise contribute to quality loss and taste-change during transport and storage.
By helping maintain a more favourable O₂/CO₂ balance within the package headspace, d2p® EA supports normal produce respiration and helps reduce the risk of undesirable anaerobic conditions associated with very low oxygen concentrations.
The active structure also adsorbs water vapour and reduces excess humidity inside the package. This supports produce appearance, texture and overall quality and reduces moisture-related deterioration. The system also acts as a moisture buffer by releasing moisture if humidity falls below the optimum level. Together, these mechanisms slow the process of ripening and quality deterioration during storage, transport and retail display.
The latest independent test report was issued by AIMPLAS, an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, following testing performed on its behalf by a specialist laboratory with extensive experience in this field.
Across the six test conditions, d2p® EA reduced ethylene concentrations by 16.8% - 46.7%, compared with 0.8% - 4.0% for the conventional polyethylene packaging.
Static and pulse testing assessed both adsorption capacity and sustained ethylene removal.

Separately, banana trials were conducted in South Africa, which demonstrated quality benefits over 14 days, including reduced skin discolouration and sugar-spot formation, with no effect on taste.
Building on this first commercial deployment, the Company is progressing its global programme for d2p® EA - targeting fresh-produce, export-packaging and retail applications where maintaining quality, reducing spoilage and extending marketable life are key commercial priorities. The scale of the underlying food-loss challenge-and therefore the potential opportunity-is significant:
FAO's widely cited 2011 study estimated that roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, amounting to around 1.3 billion tonnes per year.
UNEP's Food Waste Index Report 2024 estimates that 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste were generated in 2022 at household, food-service and retail levels.
FAO also reports that around 13.2% of food is lost in the supply chain after harvest and before retail, while fruit and vegetables experience the highest losses of any major food category, typically around 45% of all production.
By helping to preserve food for human consumption and reduce spoilage, d2p® EA technology will also reduce the carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) emissions associated with decomposing food. These are both greenhouse gases.
Symphony has also developed d2p® technologies which help reduce waste by protecting food in bulk storage from insects and rodents, and by providing antimicrobial protection for food-packaging applications.
