Energy From Waste Innovation Award

Summary by AI BETAClose X

Powerhouse Energy Group PLC has won the "Energy From Waste Innovation Achievement Of The Year" award for its proprietary DMG® system, which converts non-recyclable waste into syngas or hydrogen. The technology operates at around 1,000°C in a low-oxygen environment, capturing carbon as a solid residue, and is available in modular configurations from 2.5 to 40 tonnes per day. The company highlights that its solution is commercially viable, with costs comparable to fossil fuels and no reliance on grants. A commercial-scale pilot plant processing 2.5 tonnes per day has generated significant interest, and flagship 40-tonne-per-day projects are underway in Ballymena and Perth, demonstrating growing global demand.

Powerhouse Energy awarded top innovation accolade at national recycling awards

Powerhouse Energy Group (AIM: PHE), a company focused on the conversion of non-recyclable waste into low carbon energy alongside its revenue-generating engineering consultancy division Engsolve, is thrilled to announce a landmark achievement, winning the prestigious "Energy From Waste Innovation Achievement Of The Year" award at the letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence 2026.

The award was presented by representatives from letsrecycle.com, including Savannah Coombe, Editor of letsrecycle.com, during a celebrated ceremony of its peers, at an event that unites the very best minds from across the recycling and waste management industries.

In its award-winning entry titled "Clean energy from non-recyclable waste: affordably, efficiently, responsibly, sustainably", the Company set out its compelling vision: to eliminate non-recyclable plastic waste from the environment while delivering genuinely affordable lower-carbon energy, simultaneously addressing two of the most urgent challenges facing society today.

At the heart of this achievement is the Company's groundbreaking proprietary DMG® system, which transforms non-recyclable plastics and other hard-to-abate waste streams into clean syngas or high-purity hydrogen through an innovative rotating kiln operating at around 1,000°C in a low-oxygen environment, capturing excess carbon as a solid residue rather than releasing it into the atmosphere. Available in modular configurations from 2.5 to 40 tonnes per day, the technology delivers distributed energy solutions wherever they are needed most, and, critically, does so at costs comparable to conventional fossil fuel-based energy, with no reliance on grants or public subsidy. This makes it, in the Company's view, the only truly commercially viable solution of its kind available today.

Feedstocks range from plastics and contaminated waste to biomass, tyres and automotive shredder residue, giving the system exceptional versatility. A commercial-scale pilot plant processing 2.5 tonnes per day, installed at the Company's headquarters in Bridgend, South Wales in March 2025, has already generated significant commercial interest from across the UK and international markets, a powerful early validation of the technology's real-world potential. The Company's two flagship 40-tonne-per-day projects in Ballymena, Northern Ireland and Perth, Western Australia stand as further compelling proof of the growing global demand for this transformative solution.

The awards ceremony took place on 13 May 2026 at the iconic JW Marriott Grosvenor House London, Park Lane, London.

Paul Emmitt, CEO of Powerhouse Energy Group, commented:

"Winning this award - judged by our own peers - is a truly proud moment for everyone at Powerhouse, and a powerful endorsement of what we have built. We believe our technology represents a genuine breakthrough in the way the world can tackle non-recyclable waste, producing affordable lower-carbon energy in a way that is commercially viable today, not at some point in the future. Our projects in Ballymena and Perth are a clear signal of the extraordinary commercial momentum we are seeing both at home and internationally, with locally generated waste being turned into the syngas and hydrogen those communities need.

Above all, this award belongs to our incredible team at Powerhouse, whose unwavering commitment and exceptional hard work have made this possible."
