NTT DOCOMO, Nokia Networks showcase high-speed ...
Press Release
- Data transmission speed higher than 2 Gbps achieved using Nokia Networks mmWave technology in 70 GHz band
- Demonstration underlines DOCOMO's strong intention to launch 5G in 2020
- Results to be presented at DOCOMO booth at MWC 2015
Tokyo, Japan - 2 March, 2015
Marking an important step in the research and standardization of 5G* technologies, NTT DOCOMO, INC. (DOCOMO) has partnered with Nokia Networks to explore and harness the potential of Nokia Networks mmWave** technology in the 70 GHz spectrum band. In a joint indoor 5G trial, the two companies achieved downlink speeds of more than 2 Gbps using higher frequencies in the 70 GHz band. This development underscores the operator's readiness to deliver a state-of-the-art 5G network in 2020 and beyond. DOCOMO and Nokia Networks are also planning to conduct a 70 GHz outdoor trial later this year.

Solution details at a glance:
- Proof of Concept system was demonstrated using an access point and equipment with 1 GHz bandwidth in a laboratory environment
- Feasibility of Nokia Networks mmWave wireless communication showcased with a mobile terminal in the 70 GHz band
- 5G PHY and MAC software enabled beam tracking for pedestrian mobility and more than 2 Gbps throughput
Seizo Onoe, CTO, NTT DOCOMO, INC., said: "Utilizing higher frequency bands including millimeter wave is key to deliver extremely high performance in 5G. We believe that high-frequency spectrum shall be used not just for small cells as a means to complement the existing network, but also for building solid area coverage through coordination with existing lower frequency bands. The success of this indoor trial with Nokia Networks using the 70GHz band marks an important step forward in our 5G vision for 2020."
Hossein Moiin, CTO, Nokia Networks, said: "Moving ahead on our pledge to cooperate on 5G research and innovation for developing and validating 5G, we have laid a strong foundation for realizing DOCOMO's 5G vision. We will ensure that our focus is clearly trained on helping the operator monetize the immense revenue potential of future-ready technologies to effectively address ever-increasing network coverage and capacity requirements."
At Mobile World Congress 2015, Nokia Networks is showing the possibilities of mobile connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT).
Did you know?
Wireless data traffic will grow 10,000 fold within the next 20 years due to ultra-high resolution video streaming, cloud-based work, entertainment and increased use of a variety of wireless devices. The company also foresees that 50 billion devices will be connected to mobile networks by 2025 (the IoT era). Extremely low latency and high capacity are needed for future use cases, and 5G is expected to meet those requirements.

Notes:
* 5G is in the exploration / pre-standardized research phase. Its commercialization is planned for 2020. IMT2020 vision work in ITU-R is ongoing; 3GPP 5G work is expected to start with Release 14 early 2016.
** mmWave stands for millimeter-wave, addressing higher frequency bands in the range of 30 GHz and above. Many spectrum assets are available in the cmWave (3-30 GHz) and mmWave bands which can be exploited to develop a 5G system with peak rates greater than 10 Gbps and cell edge rates of 100 Mbps.
