Metir plc (AIM: MET), the global provider of fast-response, mobile, and point-of-use water and environmental monitoring technologies, is pleased to announce several strategic developments that support the commercial advancement of its unique proprietary PFAS detection platform across the UK, Europe, and the US.
· First commercial sale of a PFAS detector unit to Nasdaq-listed Veralto, a US$20 billion market cap global leader in essential water and product quality solutions in the US, demonstrating the capability of Metir's unique technology.
· Assessing commercial development opportunities with ProDecon Services, a leading UK PFAS decontamination specialist, for field testing of Metir's PFAS detection platform.
· Memorandum of Understanding ("MOU") signed with FIDCHEM, an innovative European developer of water treatment technologies targeting PFAS and other environmental contaminants, to co-develop AI machine learning functionality designed to simplify data output and interpretation.
· Agreement with Swansea University to transfer full proprietary IP ownership to Metir of the newly developed PFAS field testing method.
· Additional PFAS testing applications under evaluation within the global semiconductor manufacturing sector, supporting exposure to a high-growth, high-value market.
Awareness is rising about the health-critical nature of PFAS chemicals. PFAS, short for polyfluorinated alkyl substances, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals", are a family of thousands of persistent synthetic compounds widely used across industrial, agricultural and consumer applications. Historically, PFAS was a key chemical component of firefighting foams used extensively in the aircraft sector.
Growing evidence regarding the environmental and health impacts of PFAS contamination has led regulatory authorities across the UK, Europe and the US to introduce increasingly stringent limits on PFAS in drinking water, soil, industrial discharges and waste streams.
Demand is increasing for on-site, reliable and field-deployable PFAS monitoring technologies, rather than off-site laboratory testing, which can be prone to lengthy delays and potential data corruption from transit and storage. Sectors include environmental remediation, wastewater management and industrial manufacturing. According to industry forecasts, the PFAS global testing market is projected to reach US$969.5 million by 2030¹.
UK regulators and environmental agencies have tested and identified over 1,500 confirmed sites contaminated by PFAS at levels of concern, with up to 10,000 potential problem high-risk sites. Thousands of military bases, airports and industrial facilities globally are expected to require long-term remediation. The European "Forever Pollution Project" estimates there are around 23,000 PFAS-contaminated sites in Europe.
On 11 May 2026, a new EU law strengthening protections for water quality entered into force across the European Union, introducing more stringent standards for monitoring drinking water, surface water and groundwater². The Board believes this legislative development may support increasing demand for enhanced monitoring and compliance capabilities among industrial operators, utilities and public bodies across Europe.
Metir has completed the first sale of its PFAS detector to Nasdaq-listed Veralto, structured on a lease-to-purchase basis, which the Board views as an early commercial milestone. The system is expected to be deployed within Veralto's water quality operations to evaluate performance in commercial applications for sale and broader market deployment to its global client base.
Metir and ProDecon Services, a leading PFAS decontamination specialist in the UK, are evaluating a joint commercial field-testing programme which is expected to start in Q3 2026. This will generate valuable operational data to support further platform optimisation and maximise commercial development opportunities within the UK remediation and decontamination market.
Metir has signed an MOU with FIDCHEM, an innovative company based in Spain, to co-evaluate each other's PFAS technologies with a view to partnering primarily in the European market.
There are tens of thousands of different PFAS chemicals in the environment requiring detailed identification and measurement to very low levels (parts per trillion). FIDCHEM has developed and patented innovative low-energy PFAS eradication technology that is compatible with Metir's miniaturised mass spectrometer instrumentation, capable of measuring and detecting these chemicals to these extremely low levels and confirming their removal. FIDCHEM has also developed machine learning software that can be adapted to analyse PFAS data.
The MOU also covers the evaluation of integrating this AI/machine learning functionality with the Group's PFAS testing platform.
The AI/machine learning application would reduce the operational skill level required to operate the PFAS platform to below that of a highly qualified mass spectrometer specialist, enabling wider field deployment and faster identification, interpretation, and analysis of PFAS data for end users.
The Group believes that integrating AI machine learning functionality will enable broader commercial scalability and access to a wider market by simplifying and expanding the platform's usability across multiple industrial applications.
Metir has agreed to acquire sole ownership of the intellectual property for the PFAS measurement method, developed in collaboration with Swansea University over the three-and-a-half-year project.
The Group is also evaluating potential process-monitoring applications in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, which is and will remain a continuous user of PFAS chemicals. There are approximately 1,500-1,600 semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities (fabs) worldwide. In addition, there are several thousand assembly, packaging, and testing facilities. Manufacturing capacity is concentrated in East Asia, with Taiwan, South Korea, China, Japan and the United States accounting for the majority of global output. This global industry is where PFAS-related compliance requirements are becoming increasingly important.
Metir plans to continue its cooperation and product optimisation with Swansea University, a world leader in PFAS-related studies. The recently built specialist Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) at Swansea University is specialising in new process development in collaboration with industry, including monitoring PFAS levels in waste streams during semiconductor manufacturing.
Metir's PFAS platform is well-placed to monitor industrial waste streams on-site in the global semiconductor manufacturing process, a key target market for the Group.
Bob Moore, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Metir plc, commented:
"The first commercial placement of our PFAS detection technology with Veralto in the US illustrates and provides further validation of the growing demand for rapid, field-deployable PFAS monitoring solutions.
"Alongside this initial deployment, our planned field testing activities in the UK, proposed machine learning AI-enabled software development, and the agreement to secure full ownership of the underlying PFAS measurement IP, are intended to further strengthen our unique commercial offering in this field and to support future growth opportunities.
"With regulatory scrutiny of PFAS contamination increasing globally, we believe Metir is well positioned to address a significant and expanding market opportunity across environmental remediation, water treatment and industrial process monitoring."
