Gelion plc
(“Gelion”, “Company” or the “Group”)
Successful Grant of Six Patents, Including Three in the U.S.
Patent grants strengthen protection for Gelion’s sulfur battery technology and support commercialisation across key global markets
Gelion is seeking to replace the critical minerals in current lithium-ion battery cathodes with its Nano-Encapsulated Sulfur (NES™), a low-cost cathode active material made from abundantly available sulfur, that can be deployed within existing global manufacturing lines.
Gelion plc (AIM: GELN), the sulfur battery technology company, is pleased to announce the grant of six patents: three in the United States, two in Europe and one in Asia. The patents protect innovations in thermal management, cathode-electrolyte design and anode protection relating to the Group’s Lithium-Sulfur (“Li-S”) technology.
These grants further strengthen Gelion’s intellectual property position globally, particularly in the United States, as the Group advances its U.S. market entry and commercialisation strategy.
Gelion’s IP portfolio provides end-to-end protection across the Li-S battery value chain, covering the anode, cathode, electrolyte, battery design and manufacturing, and battery management. This breadth of protection supports collaborative development and commercial deployment by giving existing and prospective partners greater confidence in Gelion’s technology proposition.
The three U.S. patents align directly with the Group’s development roadmap and protect distinct advancements in thermal management, cathode-electrolyte design and anode protection. These advancements contribute to:
Aligned with Gelion’s commercialisation strategy
Gelion’s strategy is to establish its sulfur cathode technology as an alternative to incumbent cathode technologies and commercialise it through a capital-light partnership model. The Group is developing its sulfur cathode material for integration by cell manufacturers across multiple cell configurations and applications.
The newly granted patents extend protection beyond Gelion’s core cathode active material to complementary cell-level technologies, strengthening its proposition to battery manufacturers by reducing integration and intellectual property risk and supporting adoption within global supply chains and strategically important applications.
Matt Wood, Gelion CEO, commented: “Securing these patents is an important milestone in strengthening the intellectual property around our sulfur cathode platform. By extending protection into complementary cell-level technologies, we can give our current and prospective partners greater confidence to evaluate and integrate Gelion’s technology, supporting its adoption across strategically important applications and markets.”
