Annual Review points to increased transaction activity, higher completion values and continued buyer demand

 

Christie Group plc (CTG.L) reports that its agency and advisory business, Christie & Co, has published its Pubs & Restaurants Market Review 2026, which shares insights into transaction activity, buyer demand, the trading environment and emerging opportunities across the sector.

 

The report highlights a more active transactional market in 2026, despite continued cost pressures and changing consumer behaviours, with increased deal volumes as well as higher average completion values.

 

From January to August, Christie & Co's market leading Pubs & Restaurants team was instructed to sell over 360 properties, up 22% compared to the same period in 2025. The team also agreed over 230 deals, up 12.5%, and completed more than 115 transactions, up 5%. Christie & Co conducted more than 800 viewings in the period, averaging over six per sale, demonstrating continued buyer appetite.

 

Transaction values also increased, with Christie & Co reporting average freehold completion prices approximately £105,000 higher and average leasehold prices around £87,000 higher than in the same period last year. Christie & Co sold more than £60 million worth of pubs and restaurants combined in the period.

 

Despite continued cost pressures on the sector, approximately 90% of pubs Christie & Co sold in the period were continued for use as a hospitality venue.

 

Increased activity was also reflected across the Group's wider services. Over the same 8 month period, Christie & Co's Hospitality Valuations team were instructed to value over 1,500 pubs and restaurants with a combined value of over £2.1 billion.

 

Christie Finance also reported increased activity in the sector, with completions up 63%, drawdown amounts more than doubling and refinancing activity up 50% in May 2025/26 compared with May 2024/25, reflecting increased lending activity across the market. Meanwhile, Venners, the Group's stocktaking and inventory business, analysed more than 15,000 liquor stocktakes over the last 18 months, identifying more than 67% of pubs and 57% of restaurants audited were overstocked, with those businesses holding liquor stock with a combined cost value of more than £17 million.
