Sri Lanka Mineral Sands Conference
Inaugural conference reflects Sri Lanka's commitment to advancing its minerals sector
Capital Metals (AIM: CMET), a mineral sands company approaching mine development stage at its high-grade Taprobane Minerals Project in Sri Lanka (the "Project"), is proud to be a major sponsor of today's inaugural Mineral Sands Technical Conference in Sri Lanka - a knowledge-sharing event on best practices in mineral sands.
As global demand for mineral sands continues to grow, driven by their use in industries ranging from construction and manufacturing to advanced technologies, Sri Lanka is increasingly looking at how to maximise its own resource base. Against this backdrop, the conference will focus on how Sri Lanka can move from resource availability to sustained value creation.
The event has been organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Mineral Technologies. Mineral Technologies is a global leader in mineral processing, with more than 80 years' experience supporting mining projects through testwork, process design, equipment supply and technical expertise, particularly in mineral sands. The programme brings together policymakers, technical experts, and global industry leaders to examine and discuss the full chain of mineral sands development.
The Hon Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunneththi, will open the conference, which will also feature an address by a Senior Geologist from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Mrs C N B Wijerathna, who will outline national priorities for enabling a more competitive sector framework. In addition, the Chairman of Lanka Mineral Sands, Mr D M Kumara Rathna Bandara, will also address the audience.
Technical sessions will explore the mineral sands value chain, including project economics and resource development, mining and processing approaches, environmental and water management considerations, product quality and market requirements, ESG standards, rehabilitation practices, and global market dynamics, with a focus on Sri Lanka's positioning and long-term sector development.
The conference will conclude with a high-level panel discussion on the practical steps required to build a globally competitive mineral sands industry in Sri Lanka. Among the high-profile speakers will be Mr Philip Murphy (Director at PWM Consulting), Mr Simon Burgmans (Director & Principal Dredging Engineer at in2Dredging, Sri Lanka/Australia), Mr Matthew Allen (General Manager, Business Development at Mineral Technologies, Australia), Mr Ted Avis (Business Development Executive at Coastal & Environmental Services, South Africa), and Mr Gavin Diener (CEO at TZ Minerals International). The programme will also feature additional experts from India, Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka, bringing together a broad cross-section of technical and industry perspectives.
Capital Metals' Executive Chairman, Mr Greg Martyr, and Chief Operating Officer, Mr Stuart Forrester, will be in attendance, as well as over 50 Sri Lankan government officials.
Greg Martyr, Executive Chairman of Capital Metals, commented:
"This is all about harnessing Sri Lanka's long-held mineral potential - how effectively the sector can be developed through stronger technical alignment, regulatory clarity, and investment readiness.
We're pleased to be a Platinum Sponsor. The conference has been sold out for over a week with over 200 attendees, reflecting the interest in the advancement of the mineral sands sector in Sri Lanka.
The participation of Minister Sunil Handunneththi is a strong sign of the country's commitment to advancing Sri Lanka's minerals sector, as part of a wider governmental push, including the recent publication of a new National Minerals Policy, to strengthen the country's economic growth through enhanced export earnings.
We look forward to informed discussions focused on the latest innovations and best practices shaping the minerals industry and to providing further insights for our stakeholders"
