Pawmenities Report Shows Memorial Day Travelers Book Dog Boarding Earlier

Boston, US, May 22nd, 2026, FinanceWire

Pawmenities released its 2026 Boston Boarding Report ahead of Memorial Day weekend, highlighting booking trends among Boston-area dog owners and revealing that Memorial Day travelers are significantly more likely to reserve pet boarding in advance compared to other major holidays.

According to data from Pawmenities’ Seaport District and Lynnfield locations, 56 percent of all boarding bookings are typically made within seven days of a dog’s arrival date. Memorial Day, however, stands out as the exception, with only 25 percent of bookings classified as last-minute.

"Memorial Day travelers are the most prepared Pawmenities customers of the year," said Ethan Money, founder of Pawmenities. "After Memorial Day, planning discipline disappears. July 4th, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all see the majority of bookings happen in the final week — and 14 percent of all bookings at Pawmenities happen the same day a dog needs to be dropped off."

The 2026 Pawmenities Boston Boarding Report

Drawn from the company's own booking data across its Seaport District and Lynnfield locations, the report breaks down last-minute booking rates by major holiday:

  • Memorial Day: 25% of bookings made within 7 days of arrival
  • July 4th: 57% of bookings made within 7 days of arrival
  • Thanksgiving: 60% of bookings made within 7 days of arrival
  • Christmas and New Year's: 82% of bookings made within 7 days of arrival

December is the most frantic stretch of the year for Boston dog care, with four out of every five bookings made within a week of departure. Year-round, same-day "I need to drop off my dog this afternoon" requests occur 14 percent of the time.

The data also reveals a strong long-weekend pattern. Friday is Pawmenities' single busiest check-in day, with 25 percent of all boarding stays starting on a Friday — consistent with three- and four-day getaway travel typical of Memorial Day, Labor Day, and other summer holidays.

Memorial Day is the calm before the storm

"Memorial Day is the calm before the storm," Money said. "If history repeats, Boston dog owners traveling for July 4th will start scrambling around June 25th. The single best piece of advice we can give families heading into summer is this: book your July 4th boarding now, while there's still availability. Two weeks before any major holiday is when our calendars start filling up."

5 things Boston dog owners should do before summer travel season

  1. Book your July 4th boarding by mid-June. Pawmenities data shows July 4th bookings spike six days before the holiday, but availability at the Seaport and Lynnfield locations typically closes by late June.
  2. Plan for fireworks anxiety, even if you're not traveling. Independence Day weekend is the single most stressful period of the year for dogs in major cities. Thunder vests, white-noise machines, and a long pre-fireworks walk can significantly reduce panic.
  3. Tour your boarding facility before holiday weekends. Pawmenities recommends a "meet and greet" visit so a dog is familiar with the space, the staff, and the routine before their first overnight stay.
  4. Have a backup plan for Thanksgiving and Christmas now. With 60 percent and 82 percent last-minute booking rates respectively, most quality Boston boarding facilities are fully booked weeks ahead of late December. Last-minute options narrow sharply after December 18th.
  5. Update vaccinations early. Most reputable boarding facilities require current Bordetella, DHPP, and Rabies vaccines. Schedule the vet visit at least two weeks before any planned boarding so titer windows are observed. Upload here: www.clients.pawmenities.com
