                              Pre-Close Statement



Our businesses in the UK and Ireland, which have consistently reported good
growth in recent years, delivered another strong performance in the first half
of the current year. Our Continental European operations saw a challenging first
half, but are expected to produce a better second half performance.


It is currently anticipated that results for the full year will be in line with
expectations.


Separately announced today is a significant contract renewal and expansion.
Wincanton has been chosen as the preferred supplier for a contract worth £900m
over the next five years to be the sole provider of third-party logistics
services to Somerfield, the high street supermarket group.
