                         PRE-CLOSE SEASON UPDATE


Wincanton plc today issues the following pre-close season update for the twelve
months ending 31March 2004:

'We are pleased with the progress achieved in the integration of the acquired
Trans European businesses thus far against our three-year programme.

Trading trends noted at 30 September have continued in the six months to 31
March and we have, as expected, seen stronger financial performance in the
second half year, including in Germany.

We expect full year performance to be broadly in line with expectations'
