New Contract Win

Wincanton PLC 29 October 2004 29 October 2004 Wincanton Plc Wincanton and GlaxoSmithKline Seal 10-Year Partnership Wincanton Plc ('Wincanton'), one of Europe's leading providers of supply chain solutions, today announces it has secured a contract with GlaxoSmithKline ('GSK ') to support the future growth of the Consumer and Nutritional Healthcare business and develop its supply chain infrastructure. The 10-year contract is the biggest to be awarded in the industry this year. It builds on Wincanton's existing long-term relationship with GSK by specifying the design and operation of a new 34100m2 automated distribution centre in Middlewich, Cheshire. The new arrangement also consolidates and extends the term of existing contracts at Brockworth, Gloucestershire. The reorganisation of GSK's supply chain has been triggered by strong growth in the consumer and nutritional healthcare markets over the past five years. Now, a second automated facility is required to increase GSK's capacity, maximise throughput and create a northern operational base in anticipation of the impending Working Time Directive (WTD). Brian Kennedy, GSK Customer Services Director for the Consumer and Nutritional Healthcare business said: 'The new distribution centre will replicate the successful Brockworth operation. By opening a new base in the north we are able to accommodate future growth and can also create a more logical footprint for the UK supply chain ahead of the impending WTD. The Middlewich operation will also enable us to work better within the new driver hours structure and maximise vehicle utilisation.' Commenting on the win, Jeff Anderson, Managing Director, Manufacturing at Wincanton said: 'Our relationship with GSK has continued to evolve because of our proactive approach and commitment to continuous improvement. The fact that we have been awarded the Middlewich contract underlines our continuing investment in automation as a business and reinforces Wincanton's market leading position. Our experience and reputation in automated warehousing has been built up over the past 10 years through contracts with a range of retail and manufacturing customers, managing a total of 11 automated facilities.' Wincanton's partnership with GSK began in 1998 with the construction of the Brockworth automated National Distribution Centre. Most recently, Wincanton also took on the management of GSK's field aligned customer service teams. Significant success has been achieved in the extension of the existing logistics partnership into added value services.
