Whitbread PLC - Transaction in own shares

Whitbread PLC announces that on 23 December 2005 it purchased 30,760 of its
ordinary shares at an average price of 941.2665 pence per ordinary share.

The purchased shares will all be held as treasury shares. Following the above
purchase, Whitbread PLC holds 934,799 ordinary shares as treasury shares. The
total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding shares held as treasury
shares) is 256,794,761.
