STATEMENT RE: RECENT PRESS SPECULATION

Whitbread has noted recent press speculation regarding the possible acquisition
of the business and assets of Premier Lodge, a budget hotels chain currently
owned by Spirit Group, as well as a number of pub restaurants.  Whitbread
confirms it is in advanced discussions which may or may not result in a
transaction.

A further announcement will be made in due course, if appropriate.
