                  WHITBREAD APPOINTS NEW NON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR


Whitbread PLC announces that it has appointed Simon Melliss as a Non Executive
Director.  He will join the Whitbread Board on 1st April 2007 and will take over
as chairman of the Audit Committee on 1st May 2007.


Simon Melliss (54) is Group Finance Director of Hammerson PLC.  Having trained
as an accountant, he has held a number of financial roles at Reed International
PLC and Sketchley PLC before joining Hammerson in 1991 where he became Group
Finance Director in 1995.


Anthony Habgood, Whitbread's Chairman said 'I am delighted that Simon will be
joining our Board.  His financial experience and knowledge of the property
sector will be of great benefit to Whitbread.'
