Key Performance Indicators

Vodafone Group PLC 24 July 2001 24 July 2001 KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR VODAFONE SHOW ARPU STABILISING Vodafone Group Plc ('Vodafone') today announces key performance indicators for the three month period to 30 June 2001, including measures which indicate the stabilisation of registered blended average revenue per user ('ARPU'). Customer Activity Levels The total inactive customer base in Vodafone's controlled subsidiaries at 30 June 2001 was 10%, the same level as reported at 31 March 2001. This comprises contract activity levels of 96% and prepaid activity levels of 87% compared to 94% and 88% respectively at 31 March 2001. Vodafone's larger networks in Germany, Italy and the UK registered activity levels of 90%, 93%, and 84% respectively. The 3% improvement on March in Germany arose primarily as a result of now being able to report activity on an incoming as well as an outgoing basis. On a like-for-like basis activity in Germany has remained stable. Activity levels in Italy have remained constant in the period to 30 June 2001 at 93%. Prepay activity in the UK has decreased contributing to a 4% decline in activity compared to 31 March 2001 which reflects the high level of upgrading which took place in the Christmas quarter. The figures for the UK are on outgoing calls only and it is expected that activity rates will increase when incoming calls can be systematically measured, which is expected to be available for reporting in the Christmas quarter. Registered Blended ARPU Registered blended ARPU, based on a 12 month rolling average, declined from March 2001 to June 2001 by 9.5% in Germany and 4.9% in the UK. ARPU was stable in Italy. The decline in Germany is not unexpected given the exceptionally strong customer growth of lower spending prepaid customers in the year to 31 March 2001. The decline in the UK reflects the change in mix in the customer base. However, the trend in registered ARPU for the Group over the last six months is showing signs of stabilising, as demonstrated by the following information for the Group's largest controlled networks. MONTHLY REGISTERED BLENDED ARPU FOR THE 12 MONTHS TO 30 JUNE 2001 Operator Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Omnitel Vodafone EUR 33 30 28 28 27 28 27 25 29 27 28 29 D2 Vodafone EUR 36 37 33 32 30 28 27 24 27 24 25 25 UK Vodafone GBP 27 27 26 26 26 23 23 23 24 21 23 23 Active ARPU Vodafone introduced a new industry measurement of active customers in March 2001. This is the second quarter for which Vodafone has collated and reported on this information. As there is no historical information beyond the last quarter, Vodafone will include active ARPU numbers when it has a history of performance for a proper basis of comparison. However, the underlying levels of active customer spend continue to be higher than the reported registered ARPU. Data as a Percentage of Service Revenues In addition, Vodafone reports data revenues as a percentage of service revenues for its controlled subsidiaries. This reached 8.6% in the year to 30 June 2001, split 8.2% for messaging and 0.4% for internet. In the month of June this figure was 9.1% split 8.7% and 0.4% respectively. For the Group, as a whole on a proportionate basis, including associates, the corresponding figure was 6.6% for the year and 7.7% in the month of June. Sir Christopher Gent, Chief Executive of Vodafone said: 'It is very encouraging to see the beginning of a stabilisation in registered blended ARPU levels, particularly as the customer base has been effected by the change in mix, and is representative of our focus on higher value customers. In addition, our change in commercial policies has improved EBITDA margins and operating profit margins during this quarter in line with what we intended.' - ends - For further information: Tim Brown, Group Corporate Affairs Director Melissa Stimpson, Head of Group Investor Relations Darren Jones, Senior Investor Relations Manager Jon Earl, Investor Relations Manager Tel: +44 (0) 1635 673310 Lulu Bridges / Sarah Landgrebe Tavistock Communications Tel: +44 (0) 20 7600 2288 VODAFONE GROUP PLC - MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUSINESSES CUSTOMER INFORMATION AS AT 30 JUNE 2001 REGISTERED PERCENTAGE PROPORTIONATE REGISTERED COUNTRY OPERATOR OWNERSHIP(2) CUSTOMERS PREPAID (thousands) (%) NORTHERN EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA UK Vodafone 100.0 12,548 65 Ireland Eircell (3) 100.0 1,571 71 Netherlands Libertel 70.0 2,326 68 Vodafone(3) Sweden Europolitan 71.1 739 24 Vodafone Egypt Click GSM 60.0 762 89 Others 6,205 57 TOTAL 24,151 61 CENTRAL EUROPE Germany D2 99.6 21,640 60 Vodafone(3) Hungary Vodafone 50.1 139 90 Others 1,423 40 TOTAL 23,202 56 SOUTHERN EUROPE Greece Panafon 52.8 * * Vodafone Italy Omnitel 76.5 12,400 90 Vodafone(3) Malta Vodafone 80.0 95 90 Portugal Telecel 50.9 * * Vodafone(3) Spain Airtel(3) 91.6 6,668 55 Romania Mobifon 20.1 294 60 TOTAL 22,085 77 AMERICAS AND ASIA United States Verizon 44.1 12,330 6 Wireless(4) Japan J-Phone Various 6,092 3 Others 2,191 40 TOTAL 20,613 27 PACIFIC Australia Vodafone(3) 95.5 2,030 34 New Zealand Vodafone(3) 100.0 990 77 Fiji Vodafone 49.0 32 89 TOTAL 3,052 49 GROUP TOTAL 93,103 46 CONTROLLED CONTROLLED ACTIVE(1) INACTIVE COUNTRY OPERATOR PREPAID CONTRACT TOTAL TOTAL (%) (%) (%) (%) NORTHERN EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA UK Vodafone 76 99 84 16 Ireland Eircell (3) 96 96 96 4 Netherlands Libertel Vodafone(3) 88 99 91 9 Sweden Europolitan Vodafone 80 92 89 11 Egypt Click GSM 100 100 100 0 Others N/A N/A N/A N/A TOTAL 82 98 88 12 CENTRAL EUROPE Germany D2 Vodafone(3) 87 95 90 10 Hungary Vodafone 83 96 85 15 Others N/A N/A N/A N/A TOTAL 86 95 90 10 SOUTHERN EUROPE Greece Panafon Vodafone * * * * Italy Omnitel Vodafone(3) 93 92 93 7 Malta Vodafone 98 99 99 1 Portugal Telecel Vodafone(3) * * * * Spain Airtel(3) 84 95 89 11 Romania Mobifon N/A N/A N/A N/A TOTAL 90 94 91 9 AMERICAS AND ASIA United States Verizon Wireless(4) N/A N/A N/A N/A Japan J-Phone N/A N/A N/A N/A Others N/A N/A N/A N/A TOTAL N/A N/A N/A N/A PACIFIC Australia Vodafone(3) 99 95 96 4 New Zealand Vodafone(3) 93 99 94 6 Fiji Vodafone N/A N/A N/A N/A TOTAL 95 95 95 5 GROUP TOTAL 87 96 90 10 1.
