Re Investment

Vitec Group PLC 18 September 2000 VITEC INVESTS IN HIGH TECH MOTION CONTROL COMPANY Vitec Group PLC ('Vitec'), the international supplier of equipment and services to the broadcast, entertainment, photographic and retail markets, announces it has invested $5million in Intersense Inc ('Intersense'), a Boston, Massachusetts-based high technology start-up. Intersense develops systems which track the motion of moving objects with extreme accuracy by using patented motion sensors and control software, allowing a computer system to calculate an object's exact position relative to a target. The technology was first applied to military simulation systems to create sharper graphics and more stable images than competing tracking systems. Intersense has more recently supplied systems to Disney which create exact virtual prototypes of planned animation effects and to Lockheed Martin which produce more realistic Air Traffic Control trainers. Intersense is currently working with many companies to develop simulation systems for uses in markets ranging from medical diagnostics to 3D games. Vitec, through its US camera support subsidiary, Vinten Inc, identified that Intersense technology could be applied to solve the problem of linking robotic studio cameras to Virtual Reality ('VR') sets. Virtual Reality allows programme producers to use graphics and three dimensional images to create exciting content in any type of television production, including sports broadcasting, news and live entertainment. Vitec will combine the Intersense technology with Vinten's AutoCam robotic camera control system and offer it to camera manufacturers, system integrators and VR set suppliers, to provide a complete solution to broadcast and web-cast production studios. Commenting on this investment, Philip Cushing, CEO of Vitec Group said: ''Vitec has made this investment because we see the automation of broadcast and webcast studios as an area with strong growth potential. It allows programme makers to produce cutting-edge content at an economic cost. Vinten's Autocam robotic cameras, allied to the Intersense tracking system, will help make virtual reality and 3D graphics more realistic and more attainable.''
