Key biographical details



Provident Financial plc announces that it has appointed Ray Miles as a
non-executive director of the company with effect from 1 January 2004.  He is
currently Chief Executive Officer of CP Ships Limited which is publicly listed
on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges.





Additional information required by the Listing Rules:



Ray Miles is currently a director of The Chamber of Shipping Limited, the
National Maritime Museum Cornwall Trust and the West of England Ship Owners
Mutual Insurance Association (Luxembourg).  He is also a trustee of the National
Maritime Museum at Greenwich.



He is Chairman of the Box Club (the container shipping industry's CEO forum) and
Chairman of the World Shipping Council (the industry's US representative
organisation in Washington DC).



Within the last five years he was a director of Through Transport Mutual
Insurance Association Limited and Encana (U.K.) Limited.



There is no other information to be disclosed pursuant to paragraphs 6.F.2 (b) -
(g) and paragraph 16.4 (a) of the Listing Rules.
