Cube8.com PLC 10 August 2000 CUBE8 SETS UP ANTIQUES PORTAL WITH JANE BROWN Cube8, the new media and technology incubator, announced today that it has taken an initial stake of 60% in Antique Street, a B2B2C antiques portal and trading community that is set to launch in October 2000. Jane Brown, who provides editorial to QXL.com and has 12 years of antiques experience through Sotheby's and Bonhams, will run the company. The company's web site has already been soft-launched. Antique Street (www.antiquestreet.co.uk) will use technology developed by another Cube8 incubatee, Web Street (www.webstreet.co.uk) further reinforcing Cube8's strategy for synergy between its portfolio of incubatees. The investment was secured for £60,000 and will utilise Web Street's low-cost shop building service to help antiques shops gain a web presence. All shops will be grouped into the Antique Street portal, which will be further developed to encourage confident buying by 'high spend' individuals on the Internet. Antiques dealers will have the option to use a limited service for free, enabling Antique Street to grow quickly in a relatively underdeveloped sector of the luxury goods market. Individual dealers will have access to a world wide audience and an opportunity to develop 'buying public' contact lists - large contact lists traditionally being the much guarded preserve of International auctioneers. Jane Brown has been actively involved with the antiques trade for the past 12 years. Following training as part of the client service team at Sotheby's she went on to become Head of the European Ceramics & Glass Department at Bonhams. Since leaving Bonhams she has been dealing in 18th Century European porcelain and has been a consultant on live auction and valuation services on the Internet. In addition, Jane is a member of the European Ceramics Vetting committee for the prestigious Olympia Fine Art & Antique Fairs. Jane Brown is one of the few auctioneers to have transferred over from bricks and mortar to the Web enabling her to see both sides of the antiques trade. 'Antiques dealers have been slow to discover the benefits of exposure to the buying public on the Internet. At Antique Street we hope to address this. Customers buying from dealers don't pay commission and taxes charged at auction houses, so customers prefer buying from dealers. By getting more dealers online in an aggregated environment we can increase their exposure to a wider customer base while making buyers' search for antiques easier.' Commenting on the investment, Tim Dean Smith, Chairman and Chief Executive of Cube8 said, 'We are steadily fulfilling our aim of building our portfolio to encompass companies which can offer synergy to each other whilst offering practical and real benefits to the online or technology markets. The UK is the hub of the international antiques trade and Antique Street is well placed to attract the tens of thousands of dealers in the UK who recognise that there are benefits to having a worldwide presence. These dealers may not have the resources - financial or otherwise - to set up their own service and Antique Street can offer them a safe environment and marketed community.' The company's shares started trading on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange on 28th February 2000. Antique Street is headed up by Jane Brown, formerly Managing Director of ibidlive.com the live Internet, telephone and TV auction company and prior to that, Head of the European Ceramics and Glass Department at Bonhams Auctioneers, London. The company was set up in April 2000 with its headquarters in London, the center of the British Art & Antiques market. Antique Street aims to become the main provider of online services to the antiques trade. Antique Street has partnerships with online payment processing companies Netbanx and World Pay, and has been issued with a secure server certificate by Thawte. The creation of Antique Street was borne out of Cube8's philosophy of maximising synergies between its portfolio companies, the identification of a space in the market currently unoccupied plus Jane Brown's contacts and experience in the antiques trade.
