Trading Statement

Transense Technologies PLC 22 January 2001 Trading statement In 2000 Transense signed agreements with Atmel, 3DMI and SAWTEK. 2001 has started in line with expectations on all fronts. The ASIC Atmel are making for Transense's torque transducer has now been designed and prototype devices should be with the company shortly at which time the systems that are being developed will move forward to the next stage of testing with potential application licensees. The accidents involving Firestone tyres last year created a significant level of publicity and activity throughout the vehicle industry and consequently, inquiries for tyre pressure monitoring devices as a safety gauge are numerous. As a result American legislation was passed which came into force last October making it obligatory that from 2003 all new vehicles produced must be equipped with tyre pressure warning systems. Shareholders will be aware that Transense has been developing its own tyre pressure warning technologies, using surface acoustic wave devices, for over three years. Whereas other systems in the market use a lithium battery in the wheel, the company's technology does not, presenting significant environmental and cost benefits. One of the leading battery driven tyre pressure gauging technology companies is SmarTire Systems Inc, who have already signed a licence agreement with Transense. SmarTire are 10% owned by TRW which is one of the leading tier 1 automotive companies in the world specialising in supplying products to the 40 million a year passenger-car market. At the end of 2000 Transense signed an agreement with 3DMI, another American company that is interested in Transense's technology for tyre pressure monitoring. Whereas both SmarTire and TRW are interested in placing devices on the wheel. 3DMI plan to use the company's system within the structure of the composite wheels it is developing with one of North America's big three automotive manufacturers. Transense continues to explore further licensing opportunities for its technology, and is now heavily focusing on application licences having signed a number of production licences. Progress is in line with directors' expectations and announcements will be made as and when appropriate.
