Statement on CC Remedies Statement

Tesco PLC 22 February 2000 TESCO PLC Statement on Competition Commission Remedies Statement Commenting on today's publication of the Competition Commission Remedies Statement, Terry Leahy, Tesco Chief Executive said: 'The Commission has already recognised that supermarket profits are not excessive, that prices have fallen in real terms, that customers are generally very well satisfied and the market is dynamic.' 'In view of this, it's not surprising that the remedies discussed are 'entirely hypothetical' as the Commission itself emphasises.' 'The reality of the market place is of fierce competition which benefits customers. 85% of the population are less than 15 minutes drive from at least three competing supermarkets and 70% from six competing supermarkets. There's nothing hypothetical about that.' 'We will co-operate fully with the Commission to help bring their enquiry to a speedy conclusion.'
