                    NEW APPOINTMENT TO THE BOARD OF TESCO PLC


Karen Cook has been appointed as Non-Executive director to the Board of Tesco
PLC. The appointment takes effect from 1 October 2004. Karen is a Managing
Director at Goldman Sachs.

Tesco Chairman David Reid said:

'I am delighted that Karen Cook is joining the Board of Tesco. Karen is a highly
respected investment banker, and brings with her considerable knowledge of the
global financial markets.'


Notes for Editors:

Prior to joining Goldman Sachs International in 1999, Karen was Co-Head of UK
Corporate Finance at Schroders.

Karen was a non-executive director at Dixons plc for six years between 1997 and
2003.

Karen has a BSc(hons) from Bristol University and an MBA from Manchester
Business School which she completed in 1982.

Karen is married with six children.
