STATEMENT THREE
UPDATE ON IZMIT EARTHQUAKE
Twenty one of Thames Water's 82 staff in Izmit, Turkey, remain
unaccounted for following this morning's earthquake and sadly it has
been confirmed that one Turkish employee has lost his life.
Bill Alexander, Thames Water's Chief Executive, said: 'This is a
tragic loss for the family of our employee and our thoughts are with
them at this time. I remain hopeful that the 21 members of staff who
are still missing will soon be found alive and well and we will do
everything we can to aid their recovery.'
Thames Water's 12 British staff have been accounted for, and along
with those Turkish colleagues who have been able to make it to the
plant, are ensuring that water supplies are maintained and that every
assistance is given to the emergency services.
This region is known to be at risk of earthquakes and the dam and
water treatment works were designed and constructed to withstand
impacts such as those experienced today.
