Tate & Lyle was informed on 27 July 2000 that The Capital Group Companies,
Inc., and its affiliates, which include Capital Guardian Trust Company,
Capital International Limited and Capital International S.A., now hold
45,782,050 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC which is a notifiable interest
under Section 199(2) (b) of the Companies Act 1985, being 10.01 per cent. of
the nominal value of the relevant share capital, increased from their holding
on 18 May 2000 of  45,656,150 Ordinary shares which was then 9.98  per cent.
of the nominal value of the relevant share capital. 

Tate & Lyle was also informed on 27 July 2000 that Brandes Investment
Partners, LP now hold 13,105,574 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC which is
no longer a notifiable interest under Section 199(2) (b) of the Companies Act
1985, being 2.86 per cent. of the nominal value of the relevant share capital,
reduced from their holding on 16 May 2000 of  13,768,638 Ordinary shares which
was then 3.01  per cent. of the nominal value of the relevant share capital.
