     Substantial Interests in Ordinary 25p Shares of Tate & Lyle PLC


Tate & Lyle was informed on 18 August 2000 that The Capital Group Companies,
Inc., and its affiliates, which include Capital Guardian Trust Company,
Capital International Limited, Capital International S.A. and Capital
International, Inc. now hold 53,138,850 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC
which is a notifiable interest under Section 198 of the Companies Act 1985,
being 11.03 per cent. of the nominal value of the relevant share capital,
increased from their holding on 8 August 2000 of  52,452,850 Ordinary shares
which was then 11.46 per cent. of the nominal value of the relevant share
capital.
