Tate & Lyle was informed on 27 September 2000 that on 25 September 2000
purchases of Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were made at 235 pence per share for
discretionary corporate personal equity plans ('PEPs'), none of which involve
regular payments by standing order or direct debit, owned by Mr S Gifford, Mr
S Strathdee and Mr J H W Walker, all of whom are executive directors of Tate &
Lyle PLC.

200 Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were bought for PEPs owned by Mr S Gifford who
now has an interest in 154,771 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC.

108 Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were bought for PEPs owned by Mr S Strathdee
who now has an interest in 17,493 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC.

127 Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were bought for PEPs owned by Mr J H W Walker
who now has an interest in 25,022 Ordinary shares in Tate & Lyle PLC.
