Scottish Media Group Acquires Magazine Titles


Scottish Media Group plc (SMG) announces today, Thursday, 15 July, 1999, the
acquisition of two magazine titles - Independent Community Pharmacist and
Independent Electrical Retailer - to add to the Group's growing magazine
stable.

Both titles are established monthly trade journals which operate as franchises
within their respective market segments.  The titles, and five related
yearbook products, are being acquired from Newvault Ltd. (trading as
Chalvington Publishing).  Independent Community Pharmacist has a circulation
of approximately 10,000 and Independent Electrical Retailer's circulation is
approximately 6,500.

The total consideration for the acquisition is £3.1million.  SMG will acquire
net assets of approximately £0.1 million.  The titles had pro forma operating
profits of approximately £0.5 million on turnover of £1.2 million in the year
ended 30 April, 1999 and the acquisition will be earnings enhancing in the
current financial year (excluding the impact of goodwill amortisation under
FRS10 and any exceptional items).

The acquisition is in line with SMG's declared strategy to expand its
magazines business through selected acquisitions, where value can be
immediately identified.

Commenting on the acquisition, Des Hudson, Managing Director, Publishing,

sectors and they fit very well within our existing stable of magazines.  They
are classic examples of the type of acquisition that we seek to make as we
continue to grow our magazines business.'
